Reading trough certain posts on this forum (took a while) i figured you don't actually need HL2 or Portal at all to play the game as they are. What you really need is:

• Half-Life 2 Demo (219): http://store.steampowered.com/app/219/
• Portal: First Slice (410): http://store.steampowered.com/app/410/

And this is all you actually need. I hope this helps new users, and yay, first post .

Uh, no, VALVe has no rules on making people install the full game to play mods or maps. While that is a unusual way, those applications are free and they work.

There is a thread on this already, and it could be illegal, whether you get caught or not depends on your location.
