Games Underhell uses ideas from

I spotted multiple loud-to-subtle shout outs to other games as I played Underhell and thought I would try to list them all.

Cry of Fear - The atmosphere felt a lot like it. I especially got a vibe when the Chef showed up for the first time, it seemed scary enough to be Cry of Fear

Dead Rising 2 - Both a safe house that you bring survivors to and boss fights with psychopathic humans are mechanics taken from DR2

Half Life 2 - Well duh

Counter Strike (Source) - Weapons take on a more Counter Strike realistic feel than a Half Life one.

Metal Gear Solid series - Probably the biggest and easiest  to spot influence. Cyphers, stealthing, hiding in closets, and a sub-plot about a fake U.S government are all taken from it.

Team Fortress 2 - Jake protects himself by collecting many, many hats.

Dear Esther - I don't know if this can be a direct contribution, but The House is one of those games where you walk around collecting notes and having the story unfold through text and voice recordings. With a few twists.

Batman: Arkham Asylum - I got a BIG Arkham Asylum feel in the opening for Chapter 1. When it went third person behind Jake, I felt like I was escorting Joker in.

Any others you can think of?

Penumbra series/Amnesia: The Dark Decent. Scavenging for supplies in Underhell is quite similar to scavenging in those games.

I'd have to disagree with the Dear Esther thing though.

Alan Wake. There's the reality where the plot is, and then there's an insane Alan in another. Alan Wake even has an episodic system.

Also, Underhell's pmc and terrorist enemies look like the gas-mask CT's and the phoenix connexion.

Deus Ex - THE game with secret shadow governments.

Get a Life (it's a mod) - Get a Life seems to be a lesser-quality version of Underhell. It's so close, in fact, that I consider Get a Life to be an alternate timeline from Underhell's world.

Never heard of it before, it certainly sounds nothing like Underhell though  :p:

It's right here: http://www.moddb.com/mods/get-a-life

It starts out like Underhell where the player character goes to work to do stuff. Then he sees some strange stuff in some lab somewhere and then zombies (oh my). After escaping this 10-minutes segment, evil nazi-looking men in black come in to sweep up everyone unfortunate enough to be nearby. (This roughly is similar to the Prologue section and Chapter 1 if it was a lot shorter). The prologue counterpart ends when the player character gets blown up and finds himself in Zombie City, USA. Then the player character walks around the city shooting zombies and super-zombies, which is Chapter 2's counterpart.

Eventually, the player gets out of Zombie City and goes to the rural areas, where he finds groups of survivors who don't last very long after he meets them. This is roughly the Chapter 3 part of the plot. Then, for odd reasons, the player character gets shipped to the Arctic where he finds lots of MIB and zombies. When you're there, you will find the place very similar to Half Life 2 Episode 3 if it was ever made with the exception of all the rebels and combine being living dead. That is essentially the Chapter 4 of the plot. Then, without warning, you are thrown into a sci-fi action thriller with lots of enemies and a misanthropic evil twin of yourself. That's Chapter 5. Then you get zombified or killed since you're in the Artic and you're treated to a small video that says "France surrenders!" That's your epilogue.

So Get a Life is essentially Underhell if it had a nonsense storyline, less functionality, super-zombies, and huge spiders. I hate the last one in particular.

Well getting off topic a bit, based on it's story elements from get a Life, Underhell will now have Jake move into the country, goes to a faraway place to get a super weapon, fights his twin (who coincidentally probably is an actual thing), and then gets France to surrender. Good to know.

He doesn't even get to France. Jake died/zombified in the Arctic, and the player is posthumously informed that France has been zombified.

Can be seen here:

It is implied that Ito's counterpart army was completely overwhelmed, as well. Of course, the counterpart army was still very strong at the end of counterpart Chapter 1, much like Underhell's real versions.

From this, this is what I predict the future of Underhell's plot shall be, assuming it is, in fact, a better version of Get a Life:

Chapter 2: Urban Warfare

Chapter 3: Rural Warfare

Chapter 4: Arctic Warfare

Chapter 5: Space Station warfare to blow up evil Jake.

Epilogue: We play as a person on Earth, presumably a Frenchman, as the station crash lands and devastates the planet. Also, zombies win.

Of course, I have good faith that the devs will make a far better story than Get a Life's late story bit. After all, they did well so far.

So Jake died in the end? This changes the entire plot of Underhell.

SCP Containment breach: The inventory system is very similar to that of SCP containment breach. As well as the fact that monsters (zombies) have breached containment and a military force is sent in to contain it while they are also ordered to kill low level personnel.
